December Meetings🎄

Another year draws to a close and the festivities have already begun. Both meetings this month dealt with the business portion speedily so that we could have some fun and socialize.

Briefly, most of the information is included in the newsletter so be sure to read it right to the end. There were a couple of items from Program confirming the subjects for the meetings in the New Year. January will feature Barn Quilts when Karyne B will give a presention of her work in this area. The February meetings will focus on panel quilts. Please send pictures of any you have on hand, along with a write up of the story of the quilt, to the Program email (program@beaconsfieldquilters.ca). A Powerpoint slide show will be created for the meeting, but you can still bring the quilt along if you are coming to the day meeting. Both meetings will feature the same presentations but remember that the evening meeting will be held on Zoom to avoid having to go out in the worst of the weather and the dark.

The guild did well at the DDO show and the location of our stall this year was good as we were upstairs and in a corner, not close to the entrance as we were last year. This meant that it was easier to talk with people without blocking the aisles.

After Show and Tell, the extravaganza began with the holiday gift exchange. At both meetings quite a lot of members had brought gifts to exchange and Caitlin organized a fun game of pass the parcel to decide who received which present. As expected it turned out to be quite a raucous affair but finally everyone seemed mighty pleased with their gifts. Although there was one mystery gift, a very cute pincushion, that nobody admitted to bringing along. Too modest, I expect. Photos were taken of the particiapnts with their booty, so check the website to see the holiday offerings and of course the lovely show and tell.

After the gift giving we had a game organized by Pat for everyone. This consisted of quilty “would you rathers?” For example “Would you rather machine piece or hand piece” and “would you rather make half square triangles or flying geese” and many more. As expected these questions produced much good natured banter.

By now we all needed a coffee and to tuck into the delicious snacks brought along to the meeting. During this time Julie had brought the remaining stock from the show and quite a few people bought something from her. The meetings wrapped up with the Pickle jar and wishes to everyone for a happy and peaceful holiday season.

See you in January

November Meetings

Hello again and as I’m typing this the snow is coming down outside. I guess winter has arrived. So a perfect time to get out all those quilting projects and hunker down in a cozy sewing room.

Our meetings last week were both well attended and we had the pleasure of hearing from Andrea T who has given classes to many of us in the past. She talked to us as part of the “Going back to basics” theme on cutting techniques and the use of rulers. However, before we got to the presentation, the business of the meeting was dealt with fairly swiftly, as most of the pertinent information is contained in the monthly newsletter. Be sure to read it right to the end so as not to miss anything.

Both meetings were attended by new members and the speakers tried to include details of each area, but if anyone has any questions, please reach out for more information either in person at the next meeting or by email to any member of the executive. Our October in person retreat went well and the accompanying Zoom sessions were also enjoyed by those not able to attend in person. Our next retreat with be virtual on the weekend of November 15th and 16th. All guild members are welcome to attend. The link and the schedule are on the website under Retreats. Fundraising for the 2026 Show is going well and we will be offering our creations at the Craft fair in DDO on the 7th to 9th of November. Program presented more on what will be in store for the rest of this year and next. Some members of the Program team have had to withdraw so thank you to those who have stepped into the breach, Suzanne R and Claire Haillot have agreed to join the team with Christine H and Caitlyn T providing behind the scenes support. Coming up in the program we have our holiday exchange, games and a chance to buy some of our guild items at the December meeting. Then in the new year there are sessions planned on panel quilts and barn quilts, as well as outings, workshops and i’m sure lots of other fun stuff. Christine also announced that the next Tool Time will probably be held in January.

After Show and Tell and the break Andrea presented a thorough run through of cutting techniques and then an excellent demonstration of using rulers. I think everyone learned something new, and if not, it was an excellent reminder of what is possible with 6 x 24 inch ruler. Maybe it’s not necessary to buy a stack of specialized rulers especially if it’s for just one project. Andrea showed us how to cut triangles, diamonds, hexagons and dresden plates using basic rulers and templates. Very ingenious! A very useful and eye-opening presentation. Thank you Andrea.

October Meetings

Its beginning to look like fall, even though we were being treated to very summerlike weather, and the quilting season is in full swing with our second meetings of the year. Due to issues at Centennial Hall we had to move our Wednesday meeting to the Recreation Centre. Thanks to all those who made this possible by organising the equipment, snacks etc. There was a good attendance and we dealt with the business part of the meeting first followed by a lively show and tell. After the break and the Pickle Jar we watched a presentation by our own Annette H on needle turn applique using an overlay.

During the business part Noreen reminded us that we should keep our converstions for the break and not chat with our neigbours during the presentations. We are a social bunch and eager to talk but lets show respect to each other. Christine presented the Tool Time winners and said there may be a lull before the next one as there is not much on the list yet. Dont forget to donate any items that you have outgrown or which no longer speak to you. Julie T spoke about the September retreat, which went well, and details of the October retreat, which is in-person, have just been sent out in an Blast. There will also be a virtual retreat running alongside so sign up and join in for a social weekend. Julie also mentioned the successful stall at the Beaconsfield Artisans Fair on September 20th and asked for volunteers and items for sale for the DDO show in November. She especially asks for Holiday items. Details are in the newsletter.

Outreach was presented by Dawn who has had a good response to her squares project. If you want to take part, collect a centre square from her at the meeting. They will all be joined up for quilts for outreach. Also she spoke about the launch of the “move it along project” Details in the newsletter again.

After the break Annette demonstrated the use of an overlay to place the pieces for needle turn applique and showed us several tricks to make this something that is not quite so daunting. I was especially interested in the use of glue to fix the pieces in place so that my fingers are not assaulted by numerous pins. The presentation was in the form of a movie filmed by Julie T and the team are hoping to make it available to members in the future when the technicalities have been worked out. Congratulations to Julie for making this work.

Dont forget to take a look at the Show and Tell photos taken by Louise on the Photos tab of the website and Happy Thanksgiving and Halloween to everyone. See you next month.

September 2025

Hello again and welcome back to a new year of quilting. After our two meetings this week it looks like we are headed for another full year with multiple challenges, outreach projeccts and exciting program items. A full run down of everything is in the newsletter sent to all guild members so be sure to read it all the way to the end.

Both the evening and the day meeting followed the same pattern of a business section, show and tell, a social break and then the program sections. Two new members were welcomed to the evening meeting, Deborah is a member returning after a break and Sue is new quilter.

Firstly it was noted that there are a few amendments to the newsletter. A revised copy is available on the website. Tool time for September has started and the list is also on the website. Be sure to send Christine your wish list by the deadline of September 26th. Also mark your calendar for our first retreat of the year on Zoom September 20th and 21st. We will be starting on our theme of Back to Basics with applique and piecing workshops and we’ll learn to make a swiffer duster. Also on the 20th of this month the guild will be represented at the Beaconsfield craft fair in Centennial Park. Contact Julie T if you can help out. Melanie introduced the Quilting Bee for this year which starts on the 15th September. It looks like there will be 4 hives in all, 2 of which are specialty paper piecing and applique hives.

The biannual Show is planned for the beginning of June so now is a good time to start thinking about the topic for the quilt show challenge which is “Sounds of Joy”. Julie T explained what is meant by this as some of us are struggling to visualise it. It is an image that evokes the sound which gives you joy. Not an easy thing to explain. Her example will be on the website along with the requirements for the project. Other new projects for this year include the “Move It Along” project presented by Dawn. A kind of UFO project but with no pressure to finish and it doesn’t have to be a quilt. Anything that you want to move along in your sewing room from sorting your fabric scraps to donating unfinished items. Dawn also presented an outreach project. to join in, collect a 3.5inch square of the centre fabric from Outreach, and add a solid colour surround. These colourful squares will be joined together for a quilt. The instructions will be on the website.

This years program introduced by 2 of the new members of the program team (Brigitte and Lorraine) has “Quilting across Canada” as its theme. The team are aiming to contact and work with other guilds across Canada. It’s still in its early stages but lets hope for some new friends and ideas from far and wide.

Show and Tell was busy at both meetings as many members spent more summer hours than usual in their sewing rooms due to the hot and humid weather. As always the results were amazing and Louise has taken pictures for the photos page of the website. Both meetings ended with a fat quarter exchange and an orphan block adoption.

St. Jean Festivities at Centennial Park

Beaconsfield Quilters Guild were present at the Beaconsfield St Jean celebrations on 24th June 2025 where they showcased our members work and offered a free childrens activity. Thank you to all those who braved the really hot weather to represent our guild.
